Grandma said, “you are absolutely right, grandpa. She’s a very clever young lady. Smart as her dad. And we all know that Christopher is a smart man! Since he was a little boy he has made really good decisions.” When grandma said that, she began to cry. She stood up and gently put her hands on Callie’s cheeks and looked into her eyes. “You remind me of your father when he was young.” Then she took Callie’s hands in hers. “You and I have the same hands—so did my mother and grandmother. “Harold, look, she has ears like your side of the family.”

Callie, her mom, and dad joined her grandmother in crying. Grandpa had started the evening being very obstinate but even he had relaxed quite a bit. Turns out he remembered the conversation he and grandma had before Callie and her parents arrived. They had reassured each other that it is okay to be afraid. Change can be scary. He still had a ways to go in accepting people who didn’t look like him. But he was making progress. Grandma’s heart changed faster. After finally getting to know her granddaughter, it just didn’t make sense to treat her as anything less than a princess.

Although it would have been a huge surprise at the beginning of the evening, grandma made sure that everyone got hugs. Warm hugs. Long, strong hugs. Tearful hugs. Right then—while they were still eating dinner. Grandpa wasn’t a hugger. But at least he had quit frowning. And there seemed to be a different look in his eyes. As they finished their meal they started catching up on all they had missed in each other’s lives.

Later, as they were leaving, there were more warm hugs on the front porch from grandma. Callie smiled brightly, and whispered to her mom, “Do you think this would be a good time for me to tell grandma and grandpa about HARAMBEE?”

Mom replied, “Why don’t you save it for next weekend when we all go to Piedmont Park for our family picnic?”

“You’re right, mom! We are going to have so much fun with grandma and grandpa at the park, I can hardly wait!”

The End
